Downtown trolleys start their engines June 4

DOWNTOWN'S free trolley service, the Milwaukee Trolley Loop, returns to offer visitors a convenient connection to attractions and summer activities throughout Westown, East Town and the Historic Third Ward beginning June 4.

With new vehicles and a private operator, the Milwaukee Trolley Loop "Hop -n Shop, Wine -n Dine" route will continue to run daily 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesdays - Saturdays, through Aug. 16, with 20-minute headways.

For route info, visit www.KeyMilwaukee.com, www.MilwaukeeDowntown.com or call 220-4700, ext. 29.

The Milwaukee Trolley Loop is funded by the Loop Group - a group of private and non-profit organizations led by Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21.

When funding for Milwaukee County's trolley service expired in 2003, the Loop Group made the commitment to revive and fund the service. In 2007, the Milwaukee Trolley Loop linked 21,360 passengers or 22.4 passengers per hour to points of interest in Westown, East Town and the Historic Third Ward.

The service, which has been in jeopardy for 2008 due to a decline in sponsorship dollars, faced another hurdle when Milwaukee County Transit System announced it would need to cease its charter service due to changes in FTA regulations.

With the 2008 Milwaukee Trolley Loop season in peril, Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21, and the East Town, Westown and Historic Third Ward associations rallied to find a private operator to sustain a free transportation service.

Negotiations have resulted in a two-year contract with Transit Express to maintain the same level of service with two brand new trolleys, which the company has purchased with intentions to rent during off-season hours.

The Milwaukee County Transit System will continue to assist with the manufacturing and installation of signage, and brochure production for the 2008 season.

"It's imperative that we maintain a free form of public transportation that links our visitors to our most prized amenities," said Beth Nicols, executive director of Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21. "We need to continue to offer parking and mass transit solutions to counter negative perceptions and reinforce downtown's accessibility," said Nicols.
